Dryer vent cleaning promotes maximum air-flow to keep your dryer (whether new or old) operating safely and efficiently. When purchasing a new dryer consumes should be concerned with energy efficiency features. Choose a clothes dryer with automatic sensors that shut the dryer off when the clothes are dry.
Electric versus Gas Dryers
Gas dryers typically have a higher purchase price than electric dryers; however, electric dryers cost more to operate. Your local appliance store should have information about the operating costs for both gas and electric on the model you are considering.
Outdoor Venting
By law, all dryers must be vented to the outdoors; not the basement, attic or craw space. The combination of heat and moisture can produce mold which is harmful to your health. It can cause damage to the walls and ceilings in your home. Those who own gas dryers also need to be concerned about carbon monoxide.
Proper Venting Code
The dryer exhaust duct should be made of rigid metal, 4 inches in diameter with a smooth interior. Short and straight is the rule for routing dryer ducts for optimum air-flow. Very long ducts and those with 45 degree and 90 degree turns slow down the air-flow and put stress on the dryer.
Dryer Vent Cleaning
Dryer vent cleaning prevents dryer fires and helps to conserve energy. There are several tools homeowners can purchase to clean dryer vents. One is a brush that attaches to a long, flexible rod. There is also a dryer vent cleaning augur brush that rotates on a cordless drill. Dryer lint can accumulate inside the dryer, around the drum, motor, heating element, etc…
Some dryer vents are short, straight and easy for the homeowner to get to. Others require special tools and the expertise of a dryer vent cleaning professional.
No matter how energy efficient your clothes dryer is, it will cost an additional $200 – 300 per year to operate if it does not get proper air flow. You must have a proper dryer vent and exhaust system for your dryer to operate efficiently.

Charlotte, NC and www.charlottedryerventlady.com are working to educate consumers as they teach dryer fire safety and promote energy saving practices. Dave Lavalle, owner of Dryer Vent Wizard in Charlotte, NC, is all for The Right to Dry movement that supports consumers who live in areas that prohibit the use of a clothesline.
ReplyDeleteWhy would a dryer vent cleaning company support Right to Dry? Dave Lavalle says, “Laundry detergents and fabric softener sheets are made to smell like the fresh outdoors with names like fresh-air, or clean breeze. Some people like to achieve this naturally, without the chemicals and man-made products.”
When asked if he thought the Right to Dry movement was a threat to his business, Dave replied, “We are not worried about losing business due to people line-drying their laundry. Most people will continue to use their clothes dryers too. We wish to promote all green practices, including line-drying some laundry to reduce the carbon emissions released into the atmosphere.”
Unfortunately, millions of people are denied the right to dry their laundry outside because it is considered to look unattractive to some homeowner associations. Neighbors complain about the view making the area appear to be poverty stricken. They have concerns about property values declining.
Dave Lavalle advises consumers that they can get involved with the Right to Dry movement and encourage their state legislators to introduce a Right to Dry bill.
